Some Fundagelicals believe in curses. These include curses placed on you by enemies, generational curses and self-inflicted curses.

What’s a generational curse? MinisteringDeliverence.com explains, “A generational curse is basically a defilement that was passed down from one generation to another. For example, if your mother has been heavily involved in the occult, then she has become quite defiled (polluted or unclean) and has opened herself up to various demons to enter her. The Bible tells us that the sin of the parents can cause that same pollution to be handed down to their children: Lamentations 5:7, “Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.” What happens is that not only is the uncleanliness handed down, but demons move right in and take advantage of this often at a very young age in a person’s life (often before birth). The person then goes throughout life struggling with the same bondages [sic] that their parents struggle with.

This is just another example of scripture twisting. Lamentations, written by the prophet Jeremiah, spoke to a nation in bondage. What Jeremiah is trying to say is that the nation’s previous generations had sinned and now this current generation is suffering the consequences. There’s no mention of demons being passed down from generation to generation. If my parents had made poor financial decisions throughout their lives, then I can’t expect to have a massive college fund when I’m ready to go to school. For the United States, we can relate it to how we treat the environment if we continually dump waste into our groundwater supply; we shouldn’t be surprised we get brown water from our taps.

Here’s a quick test for generational curses created by Marilyn Hickey:

Quick get me to the deliverance minister! If those questions weren’t general enough for you, there are more specific ones. Questions like: Have you or your family ever been involved in witchcraft? Have you or your family ever used an Ouija board? Have you or your family read Harry Potter? Have you or your family ever used a Magic 8 Ball? If you want to check some of the questions yourself, here’s a handy list.

People who believe in generational curses live in a scary world. Demons lurk around every corner, and any little slip up can allow demons into their lives and their children’s lives. They have to be careful about every item they bring into their home and every idea that enters their head. In their minds, Satan hangs around all day waiting for an opportunity to enter them.

They practice their own form of magic. They have “prayers” and phrases they use to expel demons. They anoint with oil and bless items. They visit houses and mumble prayers of exorcism over people’s kitchens.

They believe in self-inflicted curses as well. Charisma News says, “Never say, ‘That makes me sick,’ when someone tells you something. It can open a doorway to sickness. You are speaking or claiming that something makes you sick!” You just cursed yourself. Anything you “claim” can become your reality. If you’ve ever said, “I wish he’d die,” congratulations you’ve cast a curse.

Let’s not forget about all the satanic witches that spend their time cursing others when they aren’t busy playing Dungeons & Dragons.

This kind of bad theology brings people into bondage to fear. Jesus came to set us free. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Fundagelicals who want us to live in fear of demons and curses are living a life contrary to the life Jesus wants for us. The only curse we are under is the curse of bad theology.
