Despite the scientific evidence, Fundagelicals scoff at the idea of global warming. Science is seen as a liberal plot to attack the truth of the Bible. Global warming is impossible because it’s not in the Bible.
In Genesis, the story of Noah and the ark, tells how God floods the entire earth. At the end of the story, God promises never to destroy the earth again by flood. “I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”(Genesis 19:11 NIV) So, this means the idea of global warming and rising sea levels can’t be true. God said he wouldn’t destroy life with a flood. God said it; I believe it; that settles it. Science is lying.
Of course, the possibility that humans could destroy the earth all on their own without God’s intervention never enters their mind.
I’ve heard many a sermon explain that God destroyed the earth by water the first time, but he will destroy the earth by fire the next time. The Biblical proof text for this is 2 Peter 3:3-7.
“First of all, I want you to know that in the last days men will laugh at the truth. They will follow their own sinful desires. They will say, “He promised to come again. Where is He? Since our early fathers died, everything is the same from the beginning of the world.” But they want to forget that God spoke and the heavens were made long ago. The earth was made out of water and water was all around it. Long ago the earth was covered with water, and it was destroyed. But the heaven we see now and the earth we live on now have been kept by His word. They will be kept until they are to be destroyed by fire. They will be kept until the day men stand before God and sinners will be destroyed.”
Fundagelicals interpret the flood story literally and the destruction of the earth by fire literally. The symbolic meaning of fire and water is ignored. The 2 Peter passage isn’t about literal destruction of the earth; it is the symbolic refinement of the earth and the destruction of all forces that oppose the Kingdom of God. The destruction of sinners is accomplished by the refinement of humankind.
Fundagelicals say that “if the Bible and Science disagree, Science is wrong.” They believe this demonstrates great faith. However, in the case of global warming, Science doesn’t disagree with the Bible; it reinforces the need for humans to be good stewards over creation because actions do have consequences. Ignoring the damage we humans do to creation is exactly the kind of sin that needs to be refined.
