Brian Brown co-founded the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) in 2007 to fight against the legalization of marriage for same-sex couples in 2007. Since that time, he maintains his livelihood by constantly imploring his followers to donate money so he can continue the fight against the evil left. Every tweet, email, and post on his website comes with a dire warning that funds are needed NOW to continue the fight. Brown is stuck in the eternal fundraising mode with no record of accomplishment. He constantly raises funds but accomplishes little more than paying himself.

If you look on his website, under “Our Victories” it lists this:
“We work to defend marriage and the faith communities that sustain it at the local, state, and national levels. We do this by working with legislators, by informing voters when they head to the ballot box, and by giving marriage a voice in courts of law as well as in the court of public opinion.”
So, lobbying is a victory. Perhaps you are familiar with some of his protest efforts. Have you dumped General Mills? Maybe you dumped Starbucks or thanked Chik-Fil-A. These social protests are part of NOM’s work. Never heard of them? Well, Brian Brown wants you to know your donation to his 503(c) non-profit organization counts those campaigns as a success.

Currently, one of his many fundraising pleas is soliciting dollars to fight the H.R.5 – Equality Act. I don’t mind that he raises funds; what bothers me is the way he lies to scare people into donating.
On the solicitation page to fight H.R. 5, Brown says,
This legislation actually seeks to declare that it is illegal discrimination against LGBT people to act on a sincerely held belief that marriage is only the union of one man and one woman as God designed it.
This, of course, is a lie. You can act on your sincerely held belief that marriage is between one man and one woman by getting married. No one is stopping you. There are no Federal or State officers interrupting weddings and forcing you to marry someone of the same sex. When was the last time you heard about the U.S. Government interrupting a wedding between a man and woman and forcing the bride to marry another woman?

Can you discriminate against same-sex married couples in the public sphere? Nope. If you run a public company that provides services to the general public, you are not allowed to discriminate. If you run a religious organization, you can choose not to serve the LGBTQ+ community. No church can be forced to perform a same-sex marriage; no exclusively religious venue can be forced to rent to a same-sex wedding.
Did you catch the difference? Religious groups are allowed to practice their religion as they see fit, public businesses and governmental organizations are not allowed to discriminate. If you run a cupcake shop, you are a public business. You cannot discriminate. If you don’t want to sell cupcakes to same-sex couples, incorporate as a religious organization and only sell cupcakes to likeminded Fundagelicals.
Brown continues with his lies,
There’s a lot of other problems with this bill that would be a disaster for America, and especially so for people of faith. Among other things, it imposes a dangerous transgender ideology on the nation; strips Americans of religious liberty rights when it comes to LGBT issues; forces Churches and Christian ministries to hire people who may even actively oppose their teachings; and denies those struggling with gender dysphoria from receiving counseling to help them feel more comfortable with their biological sex.
No religious liberties are being stripped away. The U.S. Constitution guarantees you can practice your faith without government interference. That pertains to religious organizations. If you don’t want LGBTQ+ people in your church and don’t want to perform a same-sex wedding, that’s fine. You do not have the “religious liberty” to discriminate in the public sector. The U.S. is a pluralistic country that does not establish one religion over another. The Public sector is a religious-free zone. I can’t force McDonald’s to serve veggie burgers because I’m a Buddhist or Hindu. If I get fired from my job at McDonald’s for refusing to sell burgers due to my religious beliefs, I can’t claim my “religious liberties” were violated, the judge will tell me I am a public business that serves ALL the public. If I’m a Government employee, whose job is to issue marriage licenses, I serve the ALL the public, not just those who agree with my religious faith.

The idea that the Government can tell you who you must hire is a flat out a lie. The Government cannot tell a religious organization who to hire. If however, a church opens a school that receives federal funding then those federal dollars have strings attached. If you want federal dollars that come from ALL the people, you must serve ALL the people. In other words, if your religious organization is supported only by donations from like-minded Christians the government doesn’t care who you hire. If you want tax-payer money, you have to include all tax-payers in your hiring practices. When you take federal dollars, you aren’t exclusively religious anymore.
As for denying counseling to people with gender dysphoria, the government doesn’t do that. Many people with Gender dysphoria receive counseling. The Fundagelicals, in fact, want to cut federal spending that provides these counseling services. What Brian Brown meant to say was, “We want to provide religion-based counseling that has been proven dangerous to the well-being of transgender people, and the State won’t let us.” Transgender people can and will continue to receive counseling that has been proven to encourage their well-being. Quack pseudo-science that harms people is being banned state-by-state right now. As Christians aren’t we under an obligation of love to promote the well-being of people rather than promote harmful techniques dressed up in religious language and perpetrated by unqualified counselors?
Sorry Brian, lies in the name of God are still lies. Your constant emails, tweets, and fundraising newsletters are full of lies that attempt to scare people into parting with their hard-earned dollars so you can enjoy a paycheck. You are nothing more than a Profit of hate.
