I’ve mentioned before that I read a lot of religious websites and blogs. Occasionally while following links and clicking through related searches, I fall down a rabbit hole. This time, I landed on an article by Kelsey Burke. In the article called “What I Learned From Conservative Evangelical Sex Message Boards,” Burke discusses some of the research for her book Christians Undercover.
She says, “After nearly a decade of studying Christian sex advice and talking to the Evangelicals who write it, here’s one thing I know for sure: Evangelicals love pegging.” and “Many of the everyday posters on Christian sex advice message boards and blogs rave about pegging, the anal penetration of a man by woman.”
I thought this couldn’t be true. I checked out a few Evangelical Christian sex websites and confirmed Burke was right. Normally I’d let this roll by without comment. I mean whatever freaky thing you want to do in the bedroom, as long as it’s two adults with mutual consent and it doesn’t risk life, limb or health, I don’t care. However, Evangelicals care very much what happens in other people’s bedrooms, and here they are getting freaky!
What bothers me most about this is the absolute blindness to their own hypocrisy, self-righteous privilege, and innate ability to nullify their own arguments against gay sex by their sexual practices. Fundagelicals love to point out how sex is based on complementarianism. Two penises or two vaginas don’t fit together so straight sex, one penis in one vagina, is the only acceptable sex. Now Fundagelical men are letting women use fake parts to enact the very act they condemn. WTF?
The most often quoted verse against homosexuality in the Bible is Leviticus 18:22 “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination.” Mainline and Progressive Christians point out that in ancient times, free men had sexual dominance. They were allowed to penetrate women, slaves or boys. A free man could penetrate those of lower social standing. The prohibition in Leviticus was upholding the Patriarchal dominance of men. For a free man to allow himself to be penetrated was considered inappropriate to his social standing. (Taboo or an abomination) That is what Leviticus 18 was prohibiting. Here we have Fundagelicals allowing themselves to be penetrated by those considered inferior. (Women are to be submissive to their husbands, he is the spiritual head) They are violating the very command they misuse to vilify the LGBTQ community. Again WHAT THE @%$&!
The justification offered is that it is still straight sex because it’s between a man and woman and it is permissible because they are married. So married couples are given a pass on breaking the rules they impose on other people.
This only goes to confirm what I always say about how Fundagelicals think: “If you do it, the Bible says its sin; if I do it; you need to understand the context of the Bible verse.”
