Evangelical superstars are falling at an astounding rate. Six months ago, Carl Lentz and his wife were fired from Hillsong megachurch in New York City due to his infidelity. His wife has recently broken her silence to say she needs a break from social media. She says she has needed to delete and block people on social media because, in her words, “Trolls are cowards” and that “SOME ‘Christians’ are anything but kind, gracious, or loving.”
Now we have a second Hillsong Pastor, Darnell Barrett, fired for lewd behavior. As Christian Today reports, “The creative director of a Hillsong Church in New Jersey has resigned over inappropriate photos sent to a volunteer.” Barrette claims it was a mistake. The shirtless picture in tight gym shorts displaying an outline of his erection was posted to Instagram and was supposed to only go to “close friends.” As excuses go, that one is pretty weak. I can’t think of any reason for a Pastor to post suggestive pictures on Instagram, nor can I imagine a pastor having friends who would want to see them.
However, it’s the fall of “prophet” Jeff Jansen that has me amazed. As Newsweek is reporting, “Evangelical pastor Jeff Jansen, a self-described “prophet,” has been asked to step down from the ministry he co-founded and has chosen to leave his wife and family to “pursue his own desires,” according to emails sent out this week by his ministry’s leadership team and his wife.” The church has framed his misbehavior as “Unbiblical behavior.” However, that leaves imaginative minds to fill in the gaps. What and who were the behavior with. Leaving his wife and kids sounds like infidelity, but who is he leaving them for?
What amazes me is this is the guy who has prophesied that Trump would win the 2020 election. When that didn’t happen, he modified the meaning of his prediction by stating that Trump had won and Biden would soon be removed. He continued to double down and predicted dates when Biden would be removed, and Trump would return.
You would think that so many wrong predictions would have doomed his prophetic career; however, it was his inability to predict the revealing of his own sin that finally nailed him. I think that some of these Evangelical superstars should read the Bible that they claim to preach.
“There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.”Luke 12:2-3
I say give it a year, and all of these guys will claim that God forgave them, and they are ready to get back to ministry. Send your money now.
