Excuse my rant here but, it’s time to break out the tinfoil hats again. The newest end times sign is scheduled for January 20, 2019. This time it is a so-called “Super Blood Wolf Moon.” Hot on the heels of 2015’s eschatological nothingburger of blood moon tetrads comes another blood moon prophecy to provoke anxiety.

Should we be worried? Short answer: no. Long answer: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

In the Bible, there are only three verses that mention the moon becoming blood: Joel 2:31, Acts 2:20 and Revelation 6:12. The Acts passage is quoting the Joel passage, and the Revelation passage is using the symbolic imagery that Joel used and was common to Jewish apocalyptic writing. When the Bible was written, the first readers understood the symbols because they were in common usage. The first readers of the Bible wouldn’t have been looking up in the sky at the moon waiting for it to change color. They would have been keeping their eyes on kings, emperors, and governments.

In the creation story of Genesis chapter 1, God creates the sun, moon, and stars. Verse 16 says, “Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.” The idea that the sun rules the day and the moon rules the night entered in Jewish prophetic writing as the sun and moon and stars representing rulers. So, when we see the sun go black in prophetic writing, it represents a government or king that falls. The same goes for moons that turn to blood or stars the fall from the sky. Celestial bodies representing earthly rulers was so common that when a new star appeared in the sky, astrologers, the magi of the nativity story, went looking for the king the new star represented.

So my first point is that the Bible isn’t talking about the moon turning literally to blood, its figurative language for a change of government here on earth. My second point is this. No one was calling the orange-red tinted full moons of a lunar eclipse “blood moons” until John Hagee and Mark Blitz started selling their book Four Blood Moons: Something is about to change. Neither astronomers nor astrologers used the term blood moon. However, Hagee who peddles end times conspiracy theories knows all you need is a catchy name for a common event that connects to a Bible verse, and you can write another money making book to sell to the gullible.

This time around, the end times crazies have a great name. It’s a “Super Blood Wolf Moon” so, obviously something big is going to happen in 2019. Let’s break down the name; it’s a super moon because the earth and moon will be closer together in orbit. Most people will not notice a difference in the apparent size of the moon. It’s a blood moon because people like that made up name for when the moon appears orange-red during a lunar eclipse, and it’s a wolf moon because some Native Americans used to call January full moons a wolf moon.

Connecting the dots, we get nothing. Looking at apocalyptical writing, we get nothing. But wait Hagee pointed out how significant events happened to the Jewish nation around the time of blood moons that fell on Jewish holidays. There is so much wrong with Hagee’s timelines.  Since Jewish holidays are lunar holidays and are celebrated during full moons, it would make sense that some of the many thousands of full moons over thousands of years would experience a lunar eclipse. There were many so-called blood moons that fell on Jewish holidays, and nothing happened. The blood moon tetrad that signaled the birth of the modern state of Israel in 1948 didn’t actually start to happen until after the event in 1949. In Hagee’s astrology system if something happens after the event, it was a predictor of that event. Apparently, God is late in sending out His announcements.

Selling books and videos about the end times is big business. It’s also just an old fashioned fortune telling con dressed up in Bible language. What’s the big significant something that’s going to happen with 2019’s “Super Blood Wolf Moon”? Same thing as last time- – – Nothing!
